Diving in Silfra

Dive between two continental plates in the bluest and clearest water you’ll ever see. A must do for all divers.

Enjoy this amazing underwater world with clarity that can’t be matched anywhere and swim between two of the biggest continental plates on the planet. You need to be an certified diver to enjoy this activity.

If someone in your group is not a certified diver they can still join you by doing the Silfra Snorkeling Day Tour.

Meeting time at the Information Center in Þingvellir National Park (if you don’t need pick up) is approx. 1 hour after departure time

Pick up and transportation

Pick up is offered from your accommodation in Reykjavík and is included in the price but you will be driven to Þingvellir National Park where Silfra is located. During the drive to Þingvellir the guide will tell you about the unique geology and cultural history of Silfra and the national park.

Arrival in Þingvellir

Upon arrival your guide will give you a detailed briefing of the dive site and the most important aspects of dry suit diving. The guide will then assist you setting up the dive equipment which is high quality BARE and Buddy brand Scuba Equipment and Apex regulators.

The Diving Experience

The tour include two dives where each dive will take about 30-40 minutes with a break in between. Maximum depth is 18 meters. In the winter, if temperatures drop below 0°C, to ensure your safety and comfort you do one extended dive for 40-50 minutes.

During your dive you will explore the four main parts of Silfra: Big Crack, Silfra Hall, Silfra Cathedral and the Silfra Lagoon.

You will float through Big Crack, Silfra’s narrowest section and where the continental plates are so close you can almost touch them.
The fissure then widens into Silfra Hall. Here the full spectrum of Silfra’s colours and clarity become all the more apparent. At this point if you look at just the right angle you can see all the way to Thingvallavatn, over 150m away. Near to the opening to Thingvallavatn we will enter the Silfra Cathedral; as the depth reaches 23m you feel like you are flying over the boulders and glacial silt. Your dive will finish in the Silfra Lagoon.

“Snorkeling Silfra”

Great experience with Dive.is during a recent snorkeling trip to the Silfra Fissure. We were picked up at our hotel right on time and had an entertaining ride out to the snorkeling site. Our guides, Reynar and Michael, were friendly, funny and filled us in on lots of local info as we drive to the destination. Once we got to Silfra those process of suiting up began. It took well over an hour to get everyone in the group geared up - add to this that it was pouring rain - yet all the while Reynar and Michael worked diligently (ensuring that everyone was safely suited up) and kept the group laughing. The snorkeling was phenomenal (and yes, cold) but it is a once-in-a-lifetime experience we are glad to have had. Would highly recommend Dive.is based on the professionalism and excellent attitudes of our guides.
“An Awesome Experience”

Coming to Iceland, I imagined doing numerous hikes, chilling in hot springs and photographing northern lights. I never thought I would go snorkelling, especially in winter. Having said that, I am so incredibly glad we got the chance to do it with dive.is and have Felix, Ted, Michál and Ásgeir as our instructors. They are truly an awesome bunch and extremely professional in their work. This was my first time snorkelling and I couldn't have asked for a more helpful staff. They made us all feel comfortable, explained everything in detail and we truly had a great time. Clear water, beautiful views, some hot chocolate to warm up and fun people around you - what else can you ask for?

“Iceland at its best”

So beautiful, raw nature, meditative and calm. Sure it was cold but that is no problem because this is definitely one of my best experiences I had in Iceland. Walking through snow to get to the water was also surreal. Thanks to Felix, Ted and Louis for there professionalism and true enjoyment of their job! Would recommend this activity to everyone.
